Voices in Property - Sian-Louise Tangney
60 Seconds with...
Welcome to our quick-fire spotlight on industry leaders and entrepreneurs in Property.
In this edition, Sian-Louise Tangney, Director of UK Sotheby’s International Realty, shares personal insights and experiences with anyone who may be currently working in or aspiring to join the London property industry.
What are you most proud of in your career?
I’m most proud of building a career I genuinely love while being a devoted mum. Creating success through resilience and consistency, without shortcuts, has shaped the woman I am today.
First property job and how you got it
After buying my first home in my early 20s, completing a renovation, and becoming a landlord, I realised very quickly the agents involved had fallen short of expectations, and I genuinely believed I could do it better.
I interviewed with all the major High Street agencies, but it was Matthew Thompson, now Head of Residential at Chestertons, who really inspired me. I joined Douglas & Gordon in 2017 as a Lettings Negotiator, and that role became the foundation of everything I’ve built since.
What motivates you?
I’m naturally competitive and hold incredibly high expectations of myself. If someone tells me I can’t do something, that’s usually all the motivation I need.
I’m inspired by trailblazers and risk-takers, people who move with intention. More than anything, I’m a solo parent to a little girl, and she reminds me every single day why I do what I do.
Best advice for preparing for an interview
Treat the interview as a two-way conversation. Yes, highlight your achievements, but also ask the questions that matter: Who will I be reporting to? What’s the culture like? What’s the progression pathway?
Arrive early, walk in calm, and present the best version of yourself.
Most importantly, be authentic you’ll always be happier in a role you earned by being unapologetically you.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Be ruthless with your personal brand, nurture meaningful relationships, and never downplay your potential. Work hard, stay kind, and trust that everything you want will happen if you show up consistently.
You’re capable of far more than you realise.
Which leader, entrepreneur, founder, or CEO inspires you?
I really admire Emma Grede, her clarity, vision, and ability to build globally respected brands is something I aspire to.
Within this industry, Becky Fatemi has always been the benchmark for me, especially as a woman and mother in this space. Working alongside her now at Sotheby’s feels like a privilege and a testament to ruthlessly striving forward.
Your best deal
Last year I rented a standout home overlooking Regent’s Park with a guide of £54,000 per month. The connection I built with the client and the collaboration with the other agent made the entire process standout. It’s one of my favourite transactions to date.
