In this edition, Nicholas Cowell, Director of Cowell Group, shares personal insights and experiences with anyone who may be currently working in or aspiring to join the London property industry.

What are you most proud of in your career?

Building a business from scratch and doing my best to keep a good name, not easy in this game. 

First property job and how you got it?

Office boy at Garrard Smith & Partners. I was 17 years old, a 16-year-old leaver. My dad got me the interview, and I knew nothing about property, but luckily for me I was with the most upcoming firm of its kind and found a place for myself. I loved it from day one. The partners gave me a chance early on in life. Thank you 

What motivates you?

I love to get up every day and go to work. Clearly the thrill of a new deal is what we all crave. It also helps I have an amazing team, and we enjoy the day-to-day banter.

Best advice for preparing for an interview?

Research who you are meeting and ask questions, but most of all listen and be yourself.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Get the right balance of work & play. Enjoy life. 

Which leader, entrepreneur, founder, or CEO inspires you?

No one person has inspired me as I can’t emanate what they do. I am lucky enough to have met many incredibly successful people, and I have never been afraid to ask them how they got there. Each and every one of them have inspired me in different ways. 

Your best deal?

Would also be my first and last and maybe in each way everyone in between. Every deal has a story: Where it came from and of course when you sold it! But if I were to choose one it would be a shop and upper in E1. We increased the value from £900k to over £4m.

What’s your favourite restaurant?

The Bike Shed on Old Street or Arts Club for lunch.
