Voices in Property - Helen Marsh
60 Seconds with...
Welcome to our quick-fire spotlight on industry leaders and entrepreneurs in Property.
In this edition, Helen Marsh, Partner at Forsters LLP shares personal insights and experiences with anyone who may be currently working in or aspiring to join the London property industry.
1. What are you most proud of in your career?
This is a difficult one. When I look back on my career, I feel far more fortunate than proud. I count myself lucky to have a job I enjoy and genuinely find interesting. And I have undoubtedly benefited from some fortunate timing along the way.
The moments I am proudest of are when my team and I go above and beyond for a client and achieve an outcome that really matters to them. Seeing the difference it makes and knowing we've earned their trust still gives me a huge buzz.
2. What was your first property job and how did you get it?
My six month property seat during my training contract at city firm, Allen & Overy. It was widely referred to as the colouring-in department. I still keep my coloured pencils close by at all times.
3. What motivates you?
Positive feedback. And perhaps a sprinkling of fear...
4. Best advice for preparing for an interview?
Do your research and show genuine interest. Don't bluff your way through questions you can't answer - most interviewers will spot it immediately. Curiosity and honesty are generally far more impressive than pretending to know everything.
5. What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Enjoy it!
(And stop wearing those great big fleeces)
6. Which leader, entrepreneur, founder, or CEO inspires you?
Michelle Obama. She is intelligent, authentic and seemingly completely unflappable. She manages to be both hugely accomplished and genuinely relatable, which is a rare combination.
7. Your best deal?
The sale of Culham Court in Henley when I was a newly qualified solicitor at Boodle Hatfield. At the time it was the most expensive house sale ever completed in England. It was exciting, complex and unlike anything I'd worked on before. What made it even better was that everyone involved, clients and advisers alike, was a pleasure to work with.
8. What's your favourite restaurant?
The French Table in Surbiton. Consistently fabulous and worth every penny.
9. Apple or Android
