In this edition, David Matthews, Managing Director of Dutch & Dutch, shares personal insights and experiences with anyone who may be currently working in or aspiring to join the London property industry.

What are you most proud of in your career?

Building the Dutch & Dutch team into one of the most respected agencies in London.

First property job and how you got it?

D&D has been my only property job and I have now been here for over 25 years. My first role was as a junior commercial agent letting shops and offices around West Hampstead. My dad and his business partner at the time interviewed me and offered me the role.

What motivates you?

Earning fees is great and pays the bills but the best motivation is knowing you’ve done a good job for a client, solving problems (and there are many!), and being thanked.

Best advice for preparing for an interview?

Relax, breathe and be yourself. Have examples to prove your interest in the property industry. Be informed about the big property issues.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Pursue what you enjoy and don’t be tempted by the biggest salary. 

Which leader, entrepreneur, founder, or CEO inspires you?

There are so many amazing people in the property industry. I am inspired by my dad, who has worked in the industry for over 60 years now and still loves it.

Your best deal?

Very early in my career, in the early 2000s I was involved in a deal in Queens Park breaking up an entire block of commercial buildings and selling to local businesses, some of them are still there today. Wasn’t the biggest deal but I remember it fondly as it was fun to work on with lots of interesting people involved.

What’s your favourite restaurant?

Roka! Oh and Carmel in Queens Park is amazing.
