The Property Career Bulletin - Don't Mind the Gap

Zamir Wheeler • October 16, 2025

Why a gap in your CV isn’t a gap in your potential.

There are many reasons for having a gap in your CV, and this should not affect your career potential. However, it often becomes harder to get back into the industry after taking time away, but this really shouldn’t be the case.

Your CV should not define you!

I have conversations every month where people ask me: Should I go travelling, or should I take this job because it will look good on my CV? My answer is always: Will this make you happy, and is it something you really want to do? If that's the case, then go for it. Life is short, and if you let a piece of paper dictate your life, I’m not sure you’ll truly reach your full potential or enjoy the things you do.

On a personal note, in 2022, I left my job to travel the world for two years, and it was the best life decision I’ve made. Since the age of 16, I had worked full-time in property, never went to university, and felt I had missed out on some life experiences. Travelling helped me really understand who I am, pushed me out of my comfort zone, and made me more assertive. I believe experiences like these can truly help you grow as a person.

Advice if you are looking for work:

Pick up the phone and speak with recruiters and employers. Having open conversations about your experiences and what you are looking to achieve next can really help you find a new role. Don’t forget to own your story and don’t apologise for your gap, explain what you gained from it.

Note to employers:

Give candidates a chance. Not all career paths look the same, and there are good reasons why people take career breaks. Give people the opportunity to tell you about their experience and how they can add value, I’m sure you’ll be glad you did.

I know I’ve only scratched the surface here, but I’ll be sharing real case studies in an article further down the line about people who have successfully returned to the property industry after taking time away. Stay tuned!

Have you taken time out from your career? I’d love to hear what you learned during your break or how you found your return!
