How to Break into the Property Industry Without Experience

Rachel Brenton • May 8, 2025

A guide for school leavers, career changers, or graduates.

Are you thinking about a career in property but don’t know where to start? Whether you’ve just left school, recently graduated, or are switching careers entirely, breaking into the property industry without experience can feel a bit daunting. However, it is possible, and we're here to show you how. We’ve listed our top strategies that have helped our candidates in the past and will enable you to take confident steps toward landing your first role in the property industry.

1.    Play to Your Strengths

The property industry is all about people, problem-solving, and potential. You do not need to have years of experience behind you, but transferable skills count for a lot. If you have ever worked in retail or hospitality, you’ve probably got excellent communication and customer service skills. If you come from a tech background, you are likely already confident with data and systems. It’s important to highlight these strengths and show how they can add value to any property role.

2.    Do Your Homework

Start by getting a feel for the different roles within property such as Lettings, Sales, Property Management, Investment, Business Support, and so on. Each one requires a range of skills and personalities. Read up on job descriptions, follow industry news, and check out LinkedIn to see what catches your interest.

3.    Get Some Exposure

You might not have experience, but you can start building it in small ways. Try shadowing someone in the industry, taking an online course, or spending some time learning about the property market in your local area. There are short courses on platforms like Propertymark that give great foundational knowledge.

4.    Reach Out and Network

The property industry is built on relationships. Reach out to professionals on LinkedIn, attend local property networking events, or speak to a recruitment agency like Collins Property Recruitment. A short message asking for advice or a quick chat can go a long way.

5.    Tailor Your CV and Cover Letter

Make sure your application shows you understand the industry and are keen to be part of it. Emphasise your transferable skills, willingness to learn, and anything you have done to prepare yourself for a role in property.

6.    Start at Entry Level—and Grow

To begin with, explore entry-level roles like Trainee Sales or Lettings Negotiator, Property Finance Assistant, or Junior Property Manager. These are fantastic starting points and give you a foot in the door, hands-on experience, and the chance to work your way up quickly. One of the most effective ways to secure an entry-level role in the property industry is by approaching local Estate Agents directly. Dress professionally, bring a well-prepared CV, and introduce yourself in person. This proactive approach not only demonstrates confidence and initiative but also gives you the opportunity to make a strong first impression. Many entry-level opportunities are not advertised online, so speaking with Managers face-to-face can often lead to valuable advice, insights, and even potential openings on the spot.
