Voices in Property - Polly Ogden Duffy
60 Seconds with...
Welcome to our quick-fire spotlight on industry leaders and entrepreneurs in Property.
In this edition, Polly Ogden Duffy, Managing Director at John D Wood, shares personal insights and experiences with anyone who may be currently working in or aspiring to join the London property industry.
What are you most proud of in your career?
I’m most proud of balancing motherhood with a career I’m passionate about. I’ve also taken real pride in driving positive change within one of London’s most traditional agencies - helping to modernise its culture and create a more supportive environment for both men and women. Someone had to do it!
First property job and how you got it
My first job in property was with Acorn Estate Agents, now part of LRG. Neil Louth gave me that opportunity. I’ll never forget walking along Lordship Lane in East Dulwich, handing my CV into every agency - it was incredibly intimidating at the time! My first role taught me to smile, stand and greet every person that entered with warmth.
What motivates you?
I’m naturally competitive and hold very high expectations of myself. I’m impatient by nature, which drives me forward, but over time I’ve learnt the value of patience - timing is everything in business. I’m also most motivated when someone tells me I can’t do something; that’s all the encouragement I need.
Best advice for preparing for an interview
If in doubt - dress up! It’s always better to overdress than underdress. Arrive early, give yourself time to grab a coffee, and walk in calm and prepared. Being late really does reflect on your time management. And one tip I always share - at the end of the interview, ask: “Do you have any reservations about offering me the role?” It gives you a chance to address any concerns on the spot rather than letting them work against you.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Believe in yourself. I was eager to get started and rushed into work, but if I could go back, I’d tell myself to take a little more time to travel and see the world. Once your career takes off, it can be hard to stop - especially when you love what you do.
Which leader, entrepreneur, founder or CEO inspires you?
Helena Morrissey. Any parent who can raise nine children while building a career of that magnitude is, frankly, incredible. She’s proof that you don’t have to choose between family and ambition.
Your best deal
It has to be the deals my team and I used to do in Fulham – we would do the viewing on Monday and exchange by Thursday. These were multi-million-pound cash deals that showed just how much is possible when a client is truly motivated. Once you’ve completed transactions at that speed, you realise how much time we waste in the process.
Favourite restaurant
The Gunton Arms and The Suffield Arms in North Norfolk are firm family favourites. The art might not be for everyone, but the food and atmosphere are fantastic.
