Liza-Jane Kelly

Head of London Residential

Savills

What are you most proud of in your career?

I’m extremely proud of what led me to where I am today at Savills; acquiring and building the Marsh & Parsons business from what was six to 15+ offices by the time we sold the company in 2012. It was a huge undertaking and I learnt a tremendous amount along the way. When my business partner and I took over in 2005, there was virtually no infrastructure and we had to put in place everything from HR to IT systems as well as completely re-structure the sales and lettings teams. It was twelve years of solid, hard work but we built a fantastic and well-respected brand that became known across London at the time. Having personally invested in the business at the beginning, it was a really personal journey too.

First property job and how you got it?

I always wanted to work in property and was determined to get into the industry as soon as I could – there was never a ‘Plan B’. From a young age I was fascinated by where we live and why and thought that working in a job where you help people find their new home would be both exciting and rewarding.

I began agency life in Dublin, before moving to London to progress my career. I have worked in the London property market for over 25 years, working my way up the career ladder from negotiator to my role today leading the London residential business at Savills. Property is all I’ve ever known and all I have ever done and it has been a thoroughly rewarding path to take. Throughout my career I have always tried to adopt a positive mindset and seek out the opportunities to learn – whether from colleagues, others around me or life’s rich tapestry of experiences.

What motivates you?

I’m motivated by being the best at what I do. I’m excited to continue to develop in my career at Savills and further build and grow our London residential business, while remaining focused on maintaining our position as market leader. Being actively involved in the progression and success of the teams I work with is something I am passionate about; I take great pleasure in seeing people grow and develop. I am a big believer in spending time with the teams I work with and being present - the human side of leadership is something I highly value.

Best advice for preparing for an interview?

Undertake plenty of preparation and understand as much as you can about the job role, area and company – the groundwork you have done will show. But above all; be yourself – it’s you that people will be drawn to, so remember to hold that close.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Believe in and be true to yourself, have more confidence and don’t be afraid of taking more risks. Recognise your own strengths and capabilities and stick to your principles and values as your career develops. Especially at the beginning of your career, I would also advise seeking out a mentor at the earliest opportunity - experience is invaluable.

Which leader, entrepreneur, founder, or CEO inspires you?

There are many leaders who I’m inspired by; they aren’t necessarily in the global spotlight but are people who run very successful businesses which at the heart of them are about the people and the culture. For me, people are fundamental to any organisation - if you don’t inspire your people, you won’t have a great business.

Your best deal?

Having worked in London for over 25 years, it’s a challenge to pick just one. However the best deals have been the ones where I have developed clients for life; people who may have bought their first flat through me and have since purchased and sold homes all over the world with Savills.

What’s your favourite restaurant?

We are incredibly lucky to live in a city with world-class dining and I love the opportunity to visit places all over the capital that have been recommended. However – if I had to pick two (as I simply can’t choose one), my favourites would be Restaurant Gordon Ramsay on Hospital Road – it’s been there for many years, the food is excellent and the customer service outstanding – and Scott’s in Richmond where along with the food, the view is exceptional.

Apple or Android?

Apple - although these days my children probably know how to use it better than I do!
