Voices in Property - Lesley Cairns
60 Seconds with...
Welcome to our quick-fire spotlight on industry leaders and entrepreneurs in Property.
In this edition, Lesley Cairns shares personal insights and experiences with anyone who may be currently working in or aspiring to join the London property industry.
What are you most proud of in your career?
While a gender imbalance remains at the top of the estate agency industry, I’m proud to have created an all-female board during my time as Managing Director at Hamptons. I am passionate about building high-performing teams and have worked hard to create the right opportunities for women to succeed.
What was your first property job and how did you get it?
My first job was as a receptionist at Chestertons’ head office. I had recently relocated from the North and was planning on entering a different industry. However, I needed to find a job quickly to pay the rent in the meantime. Within a couple of months, the office manager offered me a role as a Lettings Negotiator, and the rest is history!
What motivates you?
Making a difference to the business and everyone who works in it.
What’s your best advice for preparing for an interview?
Good preparation! My father taught me to always be ready to demonstrate how my skills and attributes could add value to a company. Know your achievements, understand your aspirations, do your homework on both the company and your interviewer, and always be yourself.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Be brave and have the confidence to step outside your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes; learn from them and use those experiences to grow.
Which leader, entrepreneur, founder, or CEO inspires you?
My father would be my first choice, I learned so much from him and was fortunate to have him as my mentor throughout my career. I would also choose Dame Laura Lee DBE, CEO of Maggie’s. She has been the driving force behind the cancer charity, growing it from one centre in Edinburgh to twenty four across Great Britain, with more in development. The services and support at Maggie’s are outstanding, and provide amazing support to many.
Your best deal?
It would probably have to be my very first Lettings deal in Hyde Park Square. It was incredibly exciting to let such a prestigious property in my first few weeks in the job!
What’s your favourite restaurant?
Les 110 de Taillevent on Cavendish Square for a special treat. Each dish is paired with a choice of wines by the glass and the wine list is exceptional.
Locally, we love Sticks’n’Sushi in Wimbledon. Great food, a lovely atmosphere and if I’m honest, we order from Deliveroo far too often!
