Welcome to our quick-fire spotlight on industry leaders and entrepreneurs in Property.

In this edition, Kate Brookfield, Director and Founder of Kate Brookfield Ltd, shares personal insights and experiences with anyone who may be currently working in or aspiring to join the London property industry.

What are you most proud of in your career?

Starting my own brand and believing in myself. I spent many years feeling so dissatisfied in the way that I was working, but was approaching my forties and just had my second baby so in honesty I was scared to leave a secure job. But my mental health was taking a toll and I desperately needed to change and head in a direction that I believed in, despite any challenges I knew I’d experience as a mother with young children. The risk was all worth it!

First property job and how you got it?

I started working part time in a boutique agency in Belsize Park having just completed on and off contracts as a singer/dancer on cruise ships and was working out my next steps. Admiral Property Partnership was run by 2 sisters and I was the only employee, they asked me to stay and told me that I would be really good at the job, so I did! It was without a doubt the best training ground and has hugely influenced how I work today. I take so much care and pride in my client relationships and understand that the true value of everything is your reputation and hard work, having started in such a small company surrounded by all the typical giant corporate brands.

What motivates you?

Of course, my husband and kids. This world I’ve created for myself gives me freedom to be present for them in ways I couldn’t do when I was employed. I also want my boys to see a strong, creative, entrepreneurial mum - I hope that everything I have done will one day give them the confidence to be true to themselves and push the boundaries in whatever industry they work in.

Best advice for preparing for an interview?

Understand the company you are interviewing for. Be yourself but do make an effort, that is always noticed. Be early!

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

To not spend the following 15 years beating yourself up for not going to university and feeling inferior to people who did. We all excel in different environments and some of the most successful people in this world couldn’t cope with the mainstream educational system. It doesn’t make you any less capable or intelligent if you don’t have a degree.

Which leader, entrepreneur, founder, or CEO inspires you?

At the moment, Steven Bartlett - it changes, but I like him and I like his public presence.

Your best deal?

A chain of 3 homes all sold with me in Kensal Rise - that felt really good.

What’s your favourite restaurant?

The Hero in Maida Vale - it’s our date night spot. It’s so chic with white paper tablecloths and candlelight. The food is amazing.

Apple or Android?

Always Apple - Android? Don’t swear at me!
