The top 9 signs that it really is time to leave your job

guest blogger • Oct 18, 2016
  1. You don't get on with your boss. This could be for a number of reasons: they are not clear with their expectations, they don't answer your questions, they don't listen or encourage your contributions, they take credit for your achievements or even worse they're a bully.

  2. You don't feel valued. Again this could be for a number of reasons: you're not being paid enough, no one appreciates what you do or the extra work you put in. You're constantly overlooked for promotions and you're not being recognised for your achievements.

  3. It's making you ill. You dread going into work every day and you constantly feel under the weather. Problems like migraines, insomnia, depression, anxiety or frequent infections or other illnesses are all signs that your job could be damaging your health.

  4. You're not challenged. You'd like a chance to use some of the skills you've developed but are being held back. Maybe you've accomplished everything you set out to achieve in the job and feel you have taken full advantage of all the learning opportunities available to you. Your day to day tasks now feel boring.

  5. No room for growth. If there's no chance of a promotion or to take on more responsibility and no increase in salary, then it's time to move on.

  6. The culture isn't right for you. They might be perfectly nice people but if there's no-one you look forward to having a chat with or you don't feel you can be yourself, then it's going to be a very lonely place to work.

  7. The company is in trouble. If you can sense things aren't going so well, it's better to look for a new job before you are forced to. No matter how loyal you are, that won't pay your bills.

  8. A better opportunity comes along. It's flattering to be approached or headhunted but it might not necessarily be a better job. Weigh up the pros and cons of each job - if the new one comes out on top then go for it.

  9. You can't rely on your team. Are other people's mistakes or incompetence effecting the quality of your work or your working relationships? It might be people in your team, management or even your clients. Whoever it is, if you've tried to work it out and you're sure it's not really YOUR fault, then it's going to be very demotivating for you to stay there.
