The Property Career Bulletin - The Secrets to a Winning CV
Many people tend to overcomplicate their CVs with pictures, fancy layouts, unusual fonts, and even star ratings for skills. However, the true art of a winning CV lies in keeping it simple, clear, and easy to read.
Over the years, I’ve reviewed countless CVs and spoken with hiring managers across different industries. One thing has become clear: the most effective CVs are the ones that communicate experience, achievements, and value without unnecessary clutter.
Here are my key tips for writing a winning CV:
1. Personal Statement.
Your personal statement should be short and impactful. One concise paragraph that captures who you are, what you’ve achieved, and what you’re looking for next.
Avoid overused phrases or long-winded descriptions. Instead, focus on giving a quick snapshot of your career so far and the kind of opportunity you’re aiming for. Keep it professional, confident, and to the point.
2 . Know Your Dates.
Always include dates for each role you’ve held, and make sure your most recent job appears first. It might sound obvious, but many CVs lack this detail. Employers consistently ask two key questions:
- How long was the candidate in each position?
- What is their current or most recent role?
Make it easy for them by clearly listing your employment dates under each company name and job title. Clarity here creates trust and makes your career timeline easy to follow.
3. Highlight What Makes You Unique.
Many candidates fill their CVs with generic bullet points describing their duties, “conducted viewings,” “managed clients,” or “negotiated offers.” While these statements describe what you did, they don’t show what makes you stand out.
Instead, under each role, include four to five bullet points that highlight your key achievements or career highlights. These should be the moments you’re proud of, for example:
- Highest-performing negotiator of the month after achieving seven sales.
- Received over 20 five-star Google reviews for customer service.
These specific examples showcase your results, personality, and professional growth far better than generic job descriptions.
4. Add Your Figures.
Numbers speak louder than words. Wherever possible, include measurable results, this adds credibility and impact to your CV.
In sales roles, especially, employers want to know your performance metrics:
- How many sales did you complete per month?
- What was your average fee or revenue?
- How did you perform against your targets?
Including these figures helps your CV stand out immediately.
5. Double Check Everything.
Before sending your CV to anyone, take time to review it carefully. Check for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors, they might seem minor, but they can leave a poor impression.
Once you’re happy with it, ask a friend, family member, or recruiter to review it as well. A fresh set of eyes can catch mistakes or suggest improvements you might have missed.
6. Keep It Simple and Honest.
The best CVs are simple, structured, and genuine. Avoid unnecessary design elements or overcomplicated layouts.
Your goal is to make it easy for an employer to see your value at a glance. Focus on your achievements, highlight what makes you unique, and remember your personal career growth is your greatest asset.
