Impostor Syndrome in Property Careers: You're Not Alone

Caron Reinhold • August 13, 2025

Have you ever felt like you do not deserve your success? That you have simply been lucky? If so, you have likely experienced impostor syndrome.

The good news is, that you are not alone, especially in the property industry.

In a results-driven sector, that focuses on constant competition and high expectations, self-doubt can creep in. Whether you are starting out as a lettings negotiator or stepping up to a senior management role, the pressure to perform can sometimes overshadow your confidence.

Common thoughts that accompany impostor syndrome often include feelings like, “I was in the right place at the right time,” or “I’m not as experienced as everyone thinks.” These self-doubts are natural, but they diminish your skills and accomplishments, ultimately causing anxiety and insecurity.

Imposter syndrome is more common than you might realise. Many high-performing professionals have questioned their own capabilities. It is important to remember, it is not a reflection of your actual competence, but rather an internal narrative that needs to be addressed.

So how can you manage it?

Speak openly.

Talking about your experiences with friends, colleagues, mentors, or even your recruiter can help normalise the feeling. You may be surprised at how many others feel the same way. Shared experiences can be reassuring and enlightening.

Record your achievements.

Make a list of all your successes. This could include deals you have closed, client and customer feedback, or milestones you have reached. Regularly looking back at what you have done can help shift your mindset and strengthen your belief in your own abilities.

Avoid comparisons.

In an industry where visibility and success are often public, it is easy to compare yourself to others. But it is so important to remember to focus on your own progress, not someone else’s. Everyone is on their own path.

Redefine what success looks like.

Success is not always about headline achievements. Consistency, resilience, learning from setbacks, and professional growth are equally important indicators of progress. These reflect your ongoing effort and the strength it takes to keep moving forward.

Find the right environment.

If your impostor syndrome is starting to feel overwhelming, it may be a sign that you are in a role or workplace that does not fully support your growth. In these cases, a change of environment can be beneficial.
